A trader made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the end of January rose in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that Maduro had been apprehended.

A particular user, which became a member in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the prior Friday.

Yet these probabilities had increased to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a sudden change in positions right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week aims to prohibit federal workers from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a market.

Market Background

Prediction markets have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to politics.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting industry.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
