The seamer had a tough time early in the series, taking just a handful of scalps. He was omitted from the previous Test, only to be brought back for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI. Surrey's Atkinson improved at the MCG, claiming a couple of wickets with the ball, and scoring 28 runs with the bat among just a trio of teammates to reach double figures. Following a brief spell in Australia's second innings, he resumed for the second day's play and removed Scott Boland taken by the wicketkeeper. However, on the final ball of that over, he delivered a variation to the batsman and immediately felt his left hamstring. The English bowler was recalled for the fourth Ashes Test after being left out the Adelaide game.
