Mikel Arteta remains confident that his team can keep managing with player absences following confirming that attacker Kai Havertz is not ready for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

The German forward has been sidelined since August following knee surgery. Initially expected to return at the start of this month, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when advancing his rehabilitation and could not progress “the next phase.”

“We learned, and we were able to put together a group that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” commented Arteta.

Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture

This news presents a dilemma for Wednesday’s fixture at the Emirates against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between persisting with Mikel Merino, who scored as a makeshift striker last weekend, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also available following a lengthy absence.

Fitness Doubts Persist

Further fitness issues affect defender William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the Chelsea match. Therefore, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.

The manager is convinced the £250m spend on reinforcements in the last transfer window has resulted in a far better place to handle such unavailability.

Squad Depth Vital for Title Challenge

When asked if more options was benefiting their league challenge, his response was positive. “Absolutely, because this season has been worse in the attacking line, and now what’s happening with the backline,” he added.

“History has shown us that we have to use players in various roles, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we are to fight at this level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Suffering Havertz

Commenting on the complication noted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “He followed all protocols. He was unable to progress to the required step and now it appears like we have overcome that hurdle.”

He shared his personal desire to have him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, personally, I love so much for his contributions to the team, but his mentality, his personality. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”
