These remarks addressed recent comments about providing long-range missiles to Ukraine.

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "Putin is attempting to derail the momentum toward increased pressure on the Kremlin." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear on Friday, but the chances of moving toward a truce by pressuring Moscow to engage sincerely seem to have diminished."

The situation came after Trump had in recent days been strengthening his rhetoric toward Moscow until Thursday's call with Putin, which the Russian government described as "highly open and constructive."

EU Fuel Restrictions and Market Impact

EU authorities have set a requirement for fuel importers into the European Union to demonstrate their fuels are not made from Russian oil, as stated in a official guideline published on recently. This step is part of the EU's upcoming prohibition on imports of refined products processed from Russian petroleum, which forms part of its latest restrictive measures against Moscow over its military actions in Ukraine.

Financial analysts noted that trading activity appeared to be considering the potential end of Indian imports of Russian crude. Several Indian refiners are getting ready to reduce Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, according to sources familiar with the matter.

"This is a favorable turn for the oil market as it would remove a major buyer of Russian oil," said Tony Sycamore, noting that crude values were steady on the trading day.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Strikes

A large-scale Moscow's unmanned aircraft and rocket assault targeted energy infrastructure in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, resulting in disruptions in eight regions. Ukrainian officials stated that Russia deployed hundreds of unmanned vehicles and dozens of missiles, along with aerial munitions.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use every single day to strike at our energy infrastructure," declared Ukraine's president, adding that attacks impacted the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and western Ukraine.

Global Political Responses

Kyiv's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Moscow demonstrated its real attitude to peace through the "terror" of these attacks. "The Russian government once again chose missiles over talks, making this attack into a clear blow to current peace efforts," she said.

Meanwhile, the EU's foreign policy chief, the bloc's representative, announced that the European Union had little option but to strengthen defensive systems against Russia. She revealed a "plan" to prepare for potential conflict by the end of the decade, including a novel anti-drone system to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is expected to start operations initially by the end of 2026 and be completely operational by the end of 2027. Brussels hopes to obtain the support of EU leaders at a meeting in the coming days.
